Plot
In 1952, in Romania, 2 Roman Catholic living at the Saint Cartha’s religious community is assaulted by a concealed force when they enter a tunnel to recover an old Christian relic. The enduring religious woman, Sister Victoria, escapes from the attacker, an evil presence showing up as a nun, and hangs herself. Her body is found by Frenchie, a village dweller who transports supplies to the holy sisters.
The Vatican comes to know about the incident and requests Father Burke to visit Rome, where they request that he travel with Sister Irene, a religious woman in her novitiate, to Romania with the end goal to investigate the state of affairs. While Sister Irene is educating children about the relationship between religion and science in a school, her Mother Superior intrudes on her and tells her that Burke is here in order to ask for Irene’s backup in his trek to Romania.
They both travel to Romania and come across Frenchie, who take them to the monastery. They find Victoria’s body and expel a key from her body. Inside, they meet the Abbess, who tells them that the holy sisters observe a phase of silence throughout the night and proposes them a place to stay at the attached convent. Frenchie is assaulted by an evil presence as he comes back to the town, however, escapes. Burke reveals to Irene that a kid he exorcized, Daniel, was lethally harmed amid the exorcism, and Burke has carried the burden of the child’s death with him from that point forward. Irene uncovers that as a young lady, she had dreams, especially of a sister, making the Church take an interest in her. Burke is saved by Irene in the wake of being buried alive in the cemetery by the demonic being.
The following day, Irene and Burke come back to the monastery, yet no one but Irene can enter as it is cloistered. She meets some of the other sisters and comes to know that they are praying continuously to keep the devil at bay. Sister Oana discloses the monastery’s history: it was constructed in the Middle Ages as a palace by a duke who was fixated on the occult. The duke called the evil entity through a hole in the mausoleums yet was slaughtered by Christian knights, who fixed the rift with an ancient rarity containing the blood of Jesus Christ. The violence during the 2nd World War triggered the rift to reopen and this unleashes the demonic entity. Burke classifies the demonic entity as Valak and learns the Abbess has been dead the whole time.
Frenchie moves back to the monastery to assist Irene and Burke. Irene is assaulted by Valak and joins the nuns in an edgy petition to fight off the devil. At the point when the group reunites, Irene finds out that that none of the sisters she had seen and conversed with were real and she had been meditating alone. Later she realized that Victoria had been the last holy sister in the monastery and had sacrificed herself to prevent Valak from having her body and releasing evil.
Speculating that the devil can only be stopped if they close the crack with the blood of Jesus Christ enclosed in the shrine, the trio recovers the vessel with the key Victoria had. After the trio opens the tunnel gate, Irene is tricked into a pentagram and Valak possessed her. Frenchie spreads a portion of the blood of Christ on her face, throwing out the evil presence. Burke is injured by Daniel’s phantom as Valak tries to suffocate Irene in a flooded chamber. Irene throws the blood of Christ on the devil’s face, expelling it as the blood of Christ hallmarks the rift. After Frenchie saves Irene, he comes to know that his real name is Maurice. Maurice has been controlled by Valak as he has an upturned cross on his neck.
After twenty years at a college workshop, Carolyn Perron and Lorraine Warren present recording of their attempt to exorcize a Maurice.
