What Things should I Check before going through my Pink Slip Inspection?

An e-safety or a pink slip investigation report verifies that your car is safe to be on the road. Most light vehicles which are more than 5 years old will require an e-safety check before you can renew its registration. Your registration renewal papers itself state whether you need to go through the pink slip investigation or not. This inspection ensures that your car meets minimum safety requirements.

The e-safety check is carried out by a certified mechanic. When your vehicle passes the inspection, the mechanic will electronically send over the report to the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). If the vehicle fails to pass the test, you are given a time period of 14 days and a Repairs Needed Report to get the work done. After the prescribed time is over, you have to pay again and take a new pink slip inspection. So, it’s of utmost importance that you pass your pink slip inspection in Sydney.  Kismet Mechanical Pty Ltd is one such RMS authorized company that carries out pink slip inspections of vehicles of all make and models. They also offer to come to you and get the inspection done at your doorstep, and that too at standard rates.

Few things that you should check/get repaired before your e-safety inspection:

The main purpose of the inspection of vehicles’ road worthiness is basically to ensure passenger safety. You don’t have to wait until the near expiry of your vehicle’s registration to take your pink slip check. You can take it anywhere up to 6 months prior to the registration expiration date. Also, trailers which weigh less than 250 kilograms and caravans weighing less than 411 kg do not require a pink slip check.

  1. Check the lights: All lights, such as the headlights, fog lights, reverse lights, indicators, brake lights etc. need to be in perfectly working condition. One of the easiest ways to check all of these is, by having someone stand outside while you switch on and off each of these lights.
  2. See the seatbelts: Next comes the seatbelts. See to it that they are in complete working order. While inspecting the seatbelts, check on the anchor points, the retractor, the seat belt lock, and watch out for any signs of wearing out or fraying.
  3. Windscreen verification: Any crack in the windscreen, however small, is needs to be examined. If the crack extends beyond 7 cm, the screen needs to be replaced. Also, the windscreen wipers need to be working correctly.
  4. Tyre Check: Check all the four tyres closely. All of them should have at least a minimum of 1.5 mm tread depth remaining inside. If any of the canvas is exposed, it needs to be fixed.
  5. Hear the Honk: Yes, it’s the horn’s turn to be checked. It’s one of the most crucial safety features of any vehicle. Test it multiple times, by pressing the horn so that you know for sure that it’s working properly.
  6. Doors verification: All the doors need to be in perfect working mode. In terms of the operating controls of the doors, their ability to open and close, ability to get locked and unlocked etc., as well as their abilities to keep the car safe and secured.
  7. Look out for any leaks: It’s also very important that you keep an eye out for any kind of leaks. For example, oil or radiator leaks, exhaust system leaks etc. If visible, they should be immediately repaired.
  8. Rust Check: A car shouldn’t have any rust as it could subsequently lead to bigger issues. So, make sure to look out for any signals of breaks in the car surface or bubbles in the paint.

So, basically these 8 things make up for the whole car itself. Make your checklist, tick these off one by one and you will basically be doing your own mini investigation prior to the e-safety check. Once all these are ticked off, you will have no problem in passing your pink slip exam, that’s for sure!
